Pastor Gene served churches in Virginia and Texas before retiring. Prior to entering into the ministry, he was a builder, land developer, and project manager of a 1,900-acre planned unit development. He was raised as a Southern Baptist, spent 25 years as a member of the Lutheran Church in America, and joined the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) before entering seminary in 1990. As a layperson, he was active in the LCA as a teacher and synod board member, and also served as a Scout Leader and City Mayor. He considers ecumenicalism an aim of his calling in ministry.
